Comb and frames are the physical foundation everything else in the hive is built on, and getting the system right — foundation type, frame spacing, comb rotation — affects brood health, honey storage, and how easy inspections are for years. This category covers frame and foundation options, comb management and rotation schedules, cross-comb prevention, and how to maintain a comb system that supports a healthy, productive colony rather than working against it.
The frame and foundation posts compare the choices made at the workbench: plastic against wax foundation, starter strips against full sheets, deep against medium frames for the brood nest, and whether to go foundationless. They also explain why bees ignore foundation outside a nectar flow, how a hive that is not level produces cross comb, and how to rubber-band wild comb into frames after a cutout.
Comb management is the second theme. Brood comb darkens as each generation leaves a cocoon behind, cells shrink and residues accumulate, so the guides cover numbering frames for rotation, when comb is due to be melted down, and the Bailey comb change as a gentler alternative to a shook swarm. Storage articles explain why wax moths target brood comb rather than clean super comb and how freezing kills every life stage. Wax posts cover rendering cappings in solar or steam melters and what to do with slumgum.
