Texas is one of the few states that doesn’t require beekeepers to register at all — but that light regulatory touch comes with real strings attached, and one of them can save Texas landowners thousands of dollars a year in…
What Irish law requires of beekeepers in 2026: DAFM registration to sell honey, the four notifiable bee diseases under S.I. 130/2016, EU rules for bringing bees in, the native bee import-ban bill, and honey labels.
Every New Zealand beekeeper must register with NZ Bee Health & Biosecurity, pay the AFB levy by 1 June, file an Annual Disease Return and have hives inspected for American foulbrood each spring. This guide maps each rule to the clause that creates it, with 2026/27 costs and two councils' bylaws.
Until June 2022, Australia was one of the last major honey-producing nations on Earth free of Varroa mite — a status that shaped the entire structure of Australian beekeeping law for decades. That changed when the parasite was detected in…
Canada has no single national beekeeping law — each province regulates beekeeping independently, with its own Act, its own Provincial Apiarist, and its own registration system. A beekeeper in Alberta and a beekeeper in Ontario are following genuinely different legal…
You don’t need a licence, permit, or planning permission to keep honey bees anywhere in the United Kingdom. A back garden, a rooftop, an allotment, or a field all qualify without any formal authorisation — a striking contrast to the…
Utah’s beekeeping laws are older than most people expect — beekeepers lobbied the territorial legislature to pass the state’s first bee inspection act in 1892, four years before Utah even became a state. That law existed to fight rampant foulbrood…
Iowa has protected registered beehives from pesticide drift since 1979 — nearly 40 years before a 2014 presidential directive asked every state to develop a Managed Pollinator Protection Plan. Iowa’s “Bee Rule” was already doing the job: commercial pesticide applicators…
Connecticut requires every beekeeper to register — for free — with an agency most other states don’t use for this purpose at all: the State Entomologist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Registration is mandatory the moment you acquire your…
Oklahoma has one of the most beekeeper-friendly legal frameworks of any state: it’s illegal for a city or county to ban or restrict keeping honeybees at all. Under state law, local governments can regulate where an apiary sits through ordinary…
Kansas repealed its state bee law in 2002, so there is no state hive registration or inspection. This guide covers the city codes that do apply, BeeCheck KS, and selling honey under K.S.A. 65-689 and the 2026 HB 2158 exemption.
New Mexico only requires beekeepers to register once they cross a “commercial apiary” threshold — and that threshold genuinely depends on which side of Interstate 40 your hives sit on. North of I-40, an apiary becomes “commercial” and subject to…
Nevada has no mandatory beekeeper registration requirement in state law at all. Unlike most states, where a registration statute simply hasn’t been activated or is limited by a threshold, Nevada’s entire beekeeping chapter — NRS Chapter 552 — genuinely contains…
New Jersey requires every beekeeper who overwinters bees in the state to register annually — and, unlike almost every other state, to actually complete a beekeeping education course as a legal condition of that registration. First-time registrants must take a…
Oregon only requires beekeepers to register with the state once they reach five or more colonies. Below that threshold, hobbyist beekeepers with a handful of backyard hives have no state registration obligation at all — a genuinely different approach from…
Kentucky does not require beekeepers to register their hives. That surprises a lot of new beekeepers, since state law under KRS Chapter 252 gives the Commissioner of Agriculture the authority to establish a registration fee schedule — but according to…
Alabama requires every beekeeper to register with the state by October 1 each year — and the state has an unusual, easy-to-miss rule that can catch new beekeepers off guard: you generally can’t bring an established colony into Alabama at…
South Carolina has no state law restricting who can keep honey bees or how many colonies you can have — and no mandatory hive registry. Where South Carolina does regulate aggressively is at the border: moving honey bees or used…
Wisconsin does not require beekeepers to register their hives with the state — but it does require anyone bringing bees or used equipment into Wisconsin to report that shipment first. That distinction matters: a hobbyist starting from scratch with a…
Maryland requires every beekeeper to register — and gives you just 30 days to do it after acquiring your first colony. Under COMAR 15.07.01, there’s no exemption for hobbyists with a single hive: the moment you take possession of bees,…
Missouri has no statewide beehive registration, but the seven Bootheel cotton counties, bees brought in from other states and Kansas City have their own rules. Here is what the statutes and city code actually require.
Most beekeepers find out what their insurance actually covers at the worst possible moment: after a hurricane, wildfire, or flood has already destroyed hives, equipment, or an entire apiary. The honest answer is that a standard homeowners policy covers far…
Flood-proofing an apiary starts long before any storm is in the forecast — it starts with where you choose to put your hives in the first place. Unlike hurricane wind and wildfire, which both have real “advance warning” preparation windows,…
Here’s the honest, counterintuitive truth this topic needs upfront: a honeybee colony generally can’t be evacuated the way a pet or a horse can during a fast-moving wildfire. The queen is too heavy with eggs to fly, and worker bees…
Hurricane Ian destroyed roughly 100,000 hives across Florida in 2022 — colonies toppled and drowned by a 12-foot storm surge, with survivors left starving as the storm wiped out the forage they depended on. For beekeepers in hurricane-prone regions, this…
