Every honey bee worker on Earth is functionally sterile, laying only unfertilized eggs that develop into drones, with one genuine exception: the Cape honey bee of South Africa, whose worker bees carry a rare genetic quirk letting them produce fully…
At the opposite end of the size spectrum from the giant honey bee already covered on this site sits the dwarf honey bee, the smallest recognized honey bee species in the world, building a delicate single comb barely larger than…
The largest honey bee species on Earth doesn’t live in a hive at all, in the sense any Western beekeeper would recognize: it builds a single massive comb hanging fully exposed in open air, often dozens of feet up a…
Long before Varroa Sensitive Hygiene became a household term among mite-resistant breeding programs, a University of Minnesota researcher was already selectively breeding bees for a broader, related trait using nothing more sophisticated than liquid nitrogen and a stopwatch. Minnesota Hygienic…
In the alfalfa seed-growing regions of Washington and Idaho, some farmers maintain something most beekeepers have never heard of: a deliberately engineered patch of salty, compacted soil called a “bee bed,” home to millions of individual native bee nests packed…
Look closely at a cluster of bees seemingly asleep on a wilted flower stem in the early morning, antennae draped well past their own body length, and there’s a good chance you’ve found a group of male long-horned bees, one…
Few native bees have a nesting behavior quite as genuinely unusual as plasterer bees, which line the inside of their underground nest cells with a smooth, waterproof secretion that dries into something scientists have literally compared to plastic wrap or…
Despite sharing a name with the large, wood-boring bee already covered on this site, small carpenter bees are a genuinely different insect with an entirely different, far less concerning nesting habit: rather than drilling into solid house siding or deck…
A fast, loudly buzzing bee that looks convincingly like a small bumblebee but disappears into a hole in a bare patch of sloped soil rather than a colony nest is very likely a digger bee, one of North America’s most…
That small, yellow-and-black striped insect hovering motionlessly in mid-air over a garden flower, then darting sideways in an instant, is very likely not a bee or wasp at all, despite looking convincingly like one at a glance. Hover flies are…
A large, dark wasp with smoky, blue-tinted wings and two conspicuous yellow spots on its abdomen, cruising low over a lawn in a distinctive figure-eight pattern, is very likely a scoliid wasp searching for a specific target hidden underground: a…
Anyone who’s spotted a tiny, perfectly rounded mud jug, sometimes no bigger than a marble, attached to a twig or garden stem has likely found a potter wasp’s nest, one of the more genuinely impressive pieces of insect architecture found…
Few insects in North America carry a reputation quite like the tarantula hawk wasp, a strikingly large, iridescent desert wasp whose sting has been described by the scientist who literally invented the pain-rating scale for insect stings as feeling like…
Anyone who’s ever found a lumpy mud tube plastered against the eaves of a shed, a porch ceiling, or the inside of a garage has encountered a mud dauber wasp’s handiwork, often without ever seeing the insect itself. Despite the…
This site has now built out full, individually researched guides covering eight distinct single-source honey varieties, from the water-white delicacy of tupelo to the sharp, minty intensity of basswood, plus a dedicated guide to imported Manuka honey and its UMF…
Buying a bee suit for a child is a genuinely different task than buying one for an adult, and treating it as a simple smaller-sized version of adult gear is one of the more common, avoidable mistakes new beekeeping families…
Basswood honey comes from one of the most productive nectar trees in North America, and yet it remains genuinely under-discussed compared to more famous single-source honeys, despite a distinctive minty, almost “fresh-cut-lumber” flavor that makes it instantly recognizable to anyone…
Fireweed honey has one of the more unusual origin stories among the single-source honeys covered on this site: it comes almost entirely from a plant that thrives specifically on disturbed, burned, or freshly logged land, meaning its supply is tied…
Clover honey is, by a wide margin, the honey most Americans have actually tasted, whether they know it by that name or not, since it’s the default variety behind most plain “honey” sold in grocery stores across the US and…
Most of the solitary bees covered on this site are gentle, docile creatures with no colony to defend and little reason to bother anyone. Wool carder bee males break that pattern entirely. A male wool carder bee will patrol a…
Sit quietly and patiently watch a patch of goldenrod or thistle in late summer, and you’ll eventually notice something most casual observers genuinely never do: not every insect moving among the flowers is there for nectar. Ambush bugs, a specialized…
With golden hair on its head and thorax, reddish-orange legs, and a body large enough to fly off with a full-grown katydid clutched in its legs, the great golden digger wasp is one of the more striking and genuinely beneficial…
Bright red-and-black, densely furry, and scurrying quickly and unpredictably across bare, sun-baked ground in broad daylight, velvet ants have earned a genuinely intimidating nickname, “cow killer,” from a sting reputation that turns out to be considerably more bark than bite.…
Beekeeping has its own vocabulary, and a lot of it, from hive anatomy to disease names to queen-rearing jargon, isn’t obvious to a newcomer. This glossary collects clear, concise definitions for the terms you’re most likely to encounter across beekeeping…
Honey’s use in modern wound care is not folk medicine; a small category of honey-based products is cleared by the FDA as medical devices and used in hospitals and wound clinics. But "honey helps wounds" is not the same claim…
